Priestly source

The Priestly source is a scholarly designation for a strand of biblical writing marked by attention to ritual, genealogies, covenants, and priesthood.

Documentary hypothesis: A theory that the Pentateuch was composed from several earlier written sources combined by editors. The Priestly source is one of the major documents reconstructed by this theory.
Priestly Code: A collection of legal and ritual materials in the Pentateuch associated with priestly concerns. Its laws and instructions form a major component of the reconstructed Priestly source.
Julius Wellhausen: A German biblical scholar whose nineteenth-century work developed the classical Documentary hypothesis. His account gave the Priestly source a major role in the history of Israelite religion.
Genesis creation narrative: The account in Genesis 1:1–2:3 describing creation in an ordered sequence of six days and a seventh day of rest. Its repeated formulas and ordered structure are widely treated as a clear Priestly passage.
Supplementary hypothesis: A model in which a core text grew through successive additions rather than combination of several independent documents. It offers an alternative to treating Priestly writing as a once-independent source.
Pentateuch: The first five books of the Hebrew Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The Priestly source is identified within this collection of biblical books.
Genealogy: A record or study of descent and family relationships across generations. Genealogies are a conspicuous organizing device in Priestly narrative.
Karl Heinrich Graf: A German biblical scholar who argued that major priestly laws were later than Deuteronomy and earlier narrative sources. His chronology helped establish the influential view of Priestly material as relatively late.
Noah's flood: The biblical narrative in which a flood destroys life on earth and Noah's family survives in an ark. Its narrative combines strands often separated into Priestly and non-Priestly accounts.
Fragmentary hypothesis: A model that explains the Pentateuch as the combination of numerous smaller texts and traditions. It challenges the idea that Priestly material formed one continuous document.
