Knowra Primary colors Primary colors Primary colors are the basic colors combined to produce other colors within a particular color system. Their identities depend on the system, such as light mixing or pigment mixing.
Additive color : A color-mixing method that combines emitted light, with overlapping sources adding their intensities. Red, green, and blue light are primaries in the standard additive system.
Visible spectrum : The range of electromagnetic wavelengths that human vision can detect. Physical wavelengths constrain which colors light-based systems can stimulate.
RYB color model : A traditional red-yellow-blue model used in art education and some paint mixing. Its familiar pigment primaries differ from the cyan-magenta-yellow model used in printing.
Color television : A television system that reproduces images using color signals and display elements. Televisions use additive primaries to create a wide range of screen colors.
Subtractive color : A color-mixing method in which materials absorb some wavelengths and reflect or transmit the rest. Cyan, magenta, and yellow pigments are the idealized primaries in subtractive mixing.
Color vision : The visual capacity to distinguish light by its spectral composition and intensity. Human color perception helps explain why three primaries can reproduce many colors.
Natural red-green-blue system : A color system based on long-, medium-, and short-wavelength receptor sensitivities in human vision. Its physiological primaries are not identical to the red, green, and blue display primaries.
Computer graphics : The creation and manipulation of visual images using computers. Digital graphics commonly encode pixel colors with red, green, and blue values.
RGB color model : An additive color model that represents colors through red, green, and blue channels. It makes the light-based primary set explicit in displays and digital images.
Cone cell : A retinal photoreceptor that responds to light and supports color vision. Three cone classes underlie the trichromatic model of human color perception.
