Prime Minister of Japan

Japan’s head of government, designated by the National Diet from among its members. The prime minister leads the Cabinet and is accountable to the Diet.

National Diet: Japan’s national legislature, composed of the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. The Diet designates the prime minister from among its members.
Shigeru Yoshida: Japanese prime minister who led the country during much of its postwar reconstruction. His tenure established a durable postwar approach to security and economic recovery.
Meiji Constitution: Japan’s 1889 constitution, which placed sovereignty in the emperor and established an imperial parliament. It preceded the postwar constitution and gave the prime minister a different constitutional setting.
Japan–United States Security Treaty: The treaty framework governing the United States’ security commitment to Japan and the stationing of US forces. Prime ministers negotiate and manage the alliance central to Japan’s postwar security.

Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution: The constitutional provision renouncing war and limiting Japan’s use of military force. Prime ministers have shaped security policy within, and sometimes contested, its constraints.
