Prince Eugene of Savoy

Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736) was a Savoyard-born general and statesman in Habsburg service. He helped lead campaigns against the Ottoman Empire and France and became one of the Habsburg monarchy’s most influential commanders.

Battle of Zenta: A 1697 battle in which Habsburg forces under Eugene decisively defeated an Ottoman army crossing the Tisza River. Eugene’s victory secured his reputation and helped force the Ottomans toward the Treaty of Karlowitz.
Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor: A Habsburg ruler who was Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 to 1705 and king of Hungary and Bohemia. Leopold admitted Eugene to Habsburg service and entrusted him with high military command.

Duke of Villars: A French general and diplomat who served Louis XIV and commanded French armies during the War of the Spanish Succession. Villars was Eugene’s French counterpart in several campaigns, including the 1712 battle at Denain.
