Polotsk Principality

A medieval East Slavic polity centered on Polotsk, ruled at various times by princes of a distinct Rurikid branch. It was a major power in the western lands of Rus’.

Polotsk: A historic city in present-day Belarus, situated on the Western Dvina River. The city gave the principality its name and served as its political center.
Rurikid succession: The transfer of rule among branches of the Rurikid dynasty through inheritance, appointment, and political contest. Polotsk’s rulers built a durable branch of the dynasty, often resisting the succession claims of Kiev.
Battle of Nemiga: A 1067 battle in which the forces of Kiev defeated Vseslav of Polotsk’s army near Minsk. The battle exposed the limits of Polotsk’s power against a coalition of neighboring princes.

Rogvolod: A prince who ruled Polotsk in the late tenth century before its conquest by Vladimir of Kiev. His defeat and death marked the principality’s incorporation into Vladimir’s expanding realm.
Trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks: A network of waterways and portages connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea and Byzantine lands. Polotsk’s river position linked it to commerce moving between northern Europe and the south.
