Principality of Transylvania

An early modern state centered in Transylvania, in present-day Romania, that emerged after the medieval Kingdom of Hungary was divided and shifted between Ottoman and Habsburg influence.

Battle of Mohács: A 1526 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Kingdom of Hungary, accelerating its political division. The defeat opened the crisis from which Transylvania’s separate principality emerged.
Ottoman suzerainty: A relationship in which a state retains internal rule while acknowledging the Ottoman sultan’s superior authority and obligations. Transylvanian princes paid tribute and sought Ottoman confirmation of their rule.
Stephen Báthory: Prince of Transylvania from 1571 who became king of Poland in 1576. His rise demonstrates how Transylvanian princely authority could extend into European dynastic politics.
