Principate

The early Roman imperial system, conventionally dated from Augustus to Diocletian, in which emperors held supreme power while preserving republican offices and institutions.

Augustus: The first Roman emperor, who established a durable imperial regime after the civil wars. His settlement created the political arrangements that defined the Principate.
Roman civil wars: A series of conflicts that divided Roman political and military factions during the late Republic. Their violence discredited republican competition and enabled Augustus's rise.
Tiberius: The second Roman emperor, who ruled from 14 to 37 CE after Augustus. His succession tested whether Augustus's system could survive beyond its founder.
