Printing press

A machine that transfers ink from a prepared surface onto paper or another material to reproduce text and images. Its mechanization made repeated copies faster and more consistent than copying by hand.

Movable type: Reusable individual characters arranged into pages for printing. Movable type let printers change a page’s text without carving a new printing surface.
Johannes Gutenberg: A German goldsmith associated with developing Europe’s first successful movable-type printing system. His Mainz workshop brought press, type, and ink technologies together in a durable production method.
Book publishing: The organized production and distribution of books for readers. Presses lowered the labor required to produce multiple copies of a book.
Printing revolution: The transformation of communication and book production brought by printing technologies in early modern Europe. The press’s multiplying capacity changed how texts were made, circulated, and preserved.

Newspaper: A regularly published periodical reporting news and other information. High-speed presses made large newspaper runs practical and economical.
Reformation: A sixteenth-century movement that divided Western Christianity and created Protestant churches. Printed Bibles and polemics helped Reformation arguments travel across Europe.
Photocopier: A machine that makes paper copies using light, electrostatic charge, and toner or ink. It reproduces existing pages directly instead of printing from composed type or plates.
