Pristina

Pristina is the capital and largest city of Kosovo, in the country’s northeast. It is Kosovo’s principal center of government, education, and commerce.

Newborn Monument: A typographic monument in Pristina unveiled on 17 February 2008, the day Kosovo declared independence. Its changing appearance has made it a public symbol of Kosovo’s independence.
Ottoman Kosovo: The region of Kosovo under Ottoman rule from the fifteenth century until the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913. Ottoman administration and urban life shaped Pristina’s historic center.
Ibrahim Rugova: A Kosovo Albanian writer and politician who led the peaceful resistance movement and served as Kosovo’s president. His political movement was based in Pristina during the 1990s.
Pristina International Airport: The international airport serving Pristina and Kosovo, located southwest of the city. It connects the capital to Kosovo’s diaspora and international destinations.
Prizren: A historic city in southern Kosovo known for its Ottoman architecture and cultural festivals. Prizren is a major cultural center, but national government is concentrated in Pristina.
National Library of Kosovo: A library in Pristina designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković and opened in 1982. Its distinctive domes and metal lattice make it one of the city’s best-known buildings.
Kosovo Vilayet: An Ottoman administrative province established in 1877 that included much of present-day Kosovo and surrounding areas. Pristina served as the vilayet’s administrative center during the late Ottoman period.
Hashim Thaçi: A Kosovo Albanian politician who led the Kosovo Liberation Army’s political wing and later served as Kosovo’s president. His public career reflects Pristina’s role as the seat of Kosovo’s postwar government.
Kosovo Assembly: The unicameral legislature of the Republic of Kosovo. Its building in Pristina anchors the city’s role as the national political capital.
Mitrovica: A city in northern Kosovo divided by the Ibar River and marked by ethnic and political tensions. Its divided urban geography contrasts with Pristina’s position as a shared national administrative center.
