Product structure : A hierarchical representation of a product and its constituent parts, assemblies, and materials. PDM systems connect files and revisions to the parts and assemblies they describe.

Document management system : Software for storing, organizing, retrieving, and controlling access to digital documents. Document-control capabilities handle drawings, specifications, and related files within PDM.
Bill of materials : A structured list of the parts, materials, and quantities required to make a product. PDM connects design data to product structures that support bills of materials.
