Proglacial lake

A lake formed at the margin of a glacier, commonly where meltwater is trapped against ice or behind a moraine or other natural barrier.

Moraine-dammed lake: A lake held back by sediment deposited at a glacier's margin. Moraine ridges commonly provide the barrier that impounds proglacial water.
Glacial lake outburst flood hazard: The risk of damaging floods from sudden drainage of glacially fed lakes. Growing or unstable proglacial lakes can threaten people and infrastructure downstream.
Lake Agassiz: A vast proglacial lake that occupied central North America near the end of the last ice age. Its changing outlets and drainage left major imprints on North American landscapes.
Glacier retreat: The recession of a glacier's terminus as ice loss exceeds ice flow toward its front. Retreat can expose new basins and enlarge lakes at glacier margins.
Ice-dammed lake: A lake impounded by a glacier that blocks drainage. A glacier itself can form the temporary wall of a proglacial lake.
Jökulhlaup: A sudden glacial flood, often released from a subglacial or ice-dammed reservoir. Icelandic proglacial and ice-dammed lakes can drain in powerful jökulhlaups.
Lake Missoula: A large ice-dammed lake that repeatedly formed in Montana during the last ice age. Its catastrophic drainage produced the Channeled Scablands.
Remote sensing of glacial lakes: The use of satellite or airborne observations to map and monitor lakes near glaciers. Remote sensing tracks lake area and changing glacier contact across remote terrain.
Glacial lake outburst flood: A sudden flood caused by the rapid release of water stored in or beside a glacier. Failure of an ice or moraine dam can abruptly drain a proglacial lake.
Glacial lake: A lake formed through glacial erosion, deposition, or meltwater processes. Proglacial lakes are one type of lake associated with glaciers.
