Progressive revelation

Progressive revelation is the belief that God discloses religious truth through successive messengers across human history, with teachings suited to each age.

Manifestation of God: In the Bahá’í Faith, a divine messenger who reveals teachings suited to a particular age. This is the Bahá’í term for the successive founders central to progressive revelation.
Bahá’u’lláh: The nineteenth-century founder of the Bahá’í Faith and author of its central scriptures. He taught that divine revelation unfolds through successive messengers.
Renewal of religion: The restoration or reform of religious life after teachings or institutions have weakened or changed. Successive revelations are understood to renew spiritual life and reshape religious law.
Religious exclusivism: The view that one religion alone possesses religious truth or provides the path to salvation. Progressive revelation assigns spiritual authority to multiple successive religious traditions.
Revelation: The disclosure of knowledge or truth by a divine or supernatural source. Progressive revelation describes revelation as a continuing historical process.
The Báb: The nineteenth-century founder of the Bábí religion, regarded by Bahá’ís as a Manifestation of God. His mission precedes Bahá’u’lláh’s in the sequence central to Bahá’í history.
Religious law: Rules and obligations regarded as authoritative within a religious tradition. The doctrine allows laws to change between religious dispensations.
Religious syncretism: The blending of elements from different religious traditions into a combined system. Recognizing multiple revelations does not mean merging their teachings into one religion.
Prophecy: A message or claim presented as communication from a deity or supernatural source. Prophetic figures are among the messengers through whom successive revelations are understood to arrive.
Kitáb-i-Íqán: A Bahá’í scripture by Bahá’u’lláh addressing religious symbolism, prophecy, and recognition of divine messengers. It explains how successive revelations relate to earlier scriptures and prophetic expectations.
