Progressive Writers' Association : A writers’ organization founded in 1936 to promote progressive literature in India. Its 1936 conference gave the movement its principal institutional platform.
Sajjad Zaheer : An Indian writer and political activist who helped found the Progressive Writers’ Association. He was a principal organizer and an author of its founding manifesto.
Social realism : An artistic approach that depicts social conditions and ordinary lives with attention to material realities. Progressive writers used realist forms to expose poverty, exploitation, and discrimination.
Angarey : A 1932 Urdu short-story collection by Sajjad Zaheer, Ahmed Ali, Rashid Jahan, and Mahmud-uz-Zafar. Its attacks on religious and social hypocrisy anticipated the movement’s program.
Progressive Writers' Association (Pakistan) : A Pakistani literary organization that continued progressive writers’ organizing after the 1947 Partition of India. It carried the movement’s institutional legacy into Pakistan.
London Progressive Writers' Group : A group of South Asian writers in London whose discussions helped shape the Progressive Writers’ Association. Its members drafted the manifesto that helped launch the movement.
Mulk Raj Anand : An Indian novelist whose English-language fiction portrayed poverty, caste oppression, and colonial rule. His novels made social injustice central to progressive literary practice.
Anti-colonialism : Opposition to colonial rule and the political, economic, and cultural systems that sustain it. It linked literary protest to struggles against British power.
Untouchable : Mulk Raj Anand’s 1935 novel following a day in the life of Bakha, a young Dalit sanitation worker. The novel depicts caste exclusion through the ordinary experiences of its protagonist.
Hindi literature : Literature written in Hindi, including poetry, fiction, drama, and criticism. Progressive writing helped shape socially engaged currents in modern Hindi literature.
