Projection (psychology)

Projection is a defense mechanism in which a person attributes feelings, motives, or impulses they find unacceptable in themselves to someone else. It can operate without conscious awareness.

Defense mechanism: An unconscious psychological process that reduces anxiety by altering how a person experiences or interprets conflict. Projection belongs to this broader family of processes that manage psychological conflict.
Sigmund Freud: An Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and developed theories of unconscious mental life. Freud described projection as a defense against internal wishes and conflicts.
Psychodynamic therapy: A form of psychotherapy that explores unconscious patterns, relationships, and emotional conflict. Therapists may explore projection when recurring interpretations of others seem tied to a client's own conflict.
Projective test: A psychological assessment method that interprets responses to ambiguous stimuli as revealing aspects of personality. Despite the shared word, a projective test is an assessment method, not the defense mechanism itself.
Repression: A defense mechanism that keeps distressing thoughts or wishes outside conscious awareness. Repression pushes unacceptable material out of awareness; projection assigns it to another person.
Anna Freud: An Austrian-British psychoanalyst who systematized the study of defense mechanisms. Her account helped establish projection within a broader classification of defenses.
Transference: The redirection of feelings and expectations from earlier relationships onto a person in the present. Projection can shape what someone attributes to a therapist, while transference concerns feelings directed toward that therapist.
False consensus effect: A cognitive bias in which people overestimate how widely others share their opinions or behaviors. This bias generalizes one's own views to others, but does not necessarily involve unacceptable feelings or unconscious defense.
Reaction formation: A defense mechanism in which an unacceptable impulse is concealed by expressing its opposite. Both defenses disguise an unacceptable impulse, but reaction formation reverses it rather than attributing it to someone else.
Psychoanalysis: A theory and therapeutic tradition focused on unconscious processes, conflict, and early experience. Projection originated as a psychoanalytic explanation of how unconscious conflict shapes perception.
