Projection screen

A surface designed to display images or video by reflecting or transmitting light from a projector. Its optical properties shape the image’s brightness, contrast, color, and viewing angle.

Gain (screen brightness): A measure of a screen’s reflected brightness relative to a reference surface, usually for a specified viewing direction. Gain describes how strongly the screen directs projector light toward particular viewers.
Video projector: An optical device that forms moving images by projecting modulated light onto a surface. The projector supplies the light that the screen reflects or transmits.
Home theater: A domestic setup designed for watching films and other video with a cinema-like presentation. Fixed-frame screens are common when a room is dedicated to viewing.
Liquid-crystal display: A flat-panel display that controls light through liquid-crystal cells and optical filters. Unlike a projection screen, an LCD produces an image within the panel itself.
Viewing angle: The range of directions from which a display remains acceptably visible. Directional reflection can brighten the image head-on while narrowing the useful audience area.
Projection surface: A surface onto which an image is projected for viewing. Projection screens are purpose-designed members of this broader class of surfaces.
Rear projection: A display arrangement in which a projector illuminates a translucent screen from behind. Transmission screens let the projector remain out of sight behind the image.
Organic light-emitting diode: A display technology in which organic compounds emit light when electrically driven. OLED pixels emit their own light rather than depending on projected illumination.
Diffuse reflection: Reflection that scatters incident light across many directions rather than preserving a single reflected beam. Matte screens use diffuse reflection to provide broad, even visibility.
Throw distance: The distance between a projector’s lens and the surface receiving its image. Throw distance and lens geometry determine image size and screen placement.
