Proletarian literature

Proletarian literature depicts working-class life and struggle, often from a socialist or Marxist perspective. It treats class relations and workers’ agency as central subjects.

Industrial Revolution: The transition to mechanized production and factory labor that began in Britain in the late eighteenth century. Factory expansion created the working conditions and urban class divisions that became recurring subjects.
Proletariat: The social class that depends primarily on selling its labor for wages. The class whose conditions and collective agency define the literature's central subject.
The Iron Heel: Jack London's 1908 dystopian novel about an oligarchy suppressing socialist revolt in the United States. Its imagined workers' uprising joins class struggle to a warning about authoritarian power.
Social realism: An artistic approach that depicts contemporary social conditions, especially inequality and hardship. It shares attention to material life but need not promote socialist politics.
Marxism: A political and economic theory centered on class conflict, capitalism, and collective ownership of production. Its account of class struggle supplied a major political framework for this literature.
Class consciousness: Awareness among members of a social class of their shared position and interests. Many works trace workers' movement from isolated hardship toward collective understanding.
The Jungle: Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel about immigrant laborers in Chicago's meatpacking industry. Its account of exploitation and workplace conditions became a landmark of American labor fiction.
Naturalism: A literary movement that portrays people as shaped by heredity, environment, and social conditions. Its emphasis on forces constraining individuals can differ from proletarian literature's stress on collective agency.
Russian Revolution: The 1917 revolutions that overthrew the Russian monarchy and brought the Bolsheviks to power. The revolution gave socialist writers a model and a state-backed cultural project.
Socialist realism: A state-promoted artistic method that presents socialist development and exemplary protagonists in accessible forms. Its later prescriptions narrowed the range of styles available to socialist writers.
