Propofol

Propofol is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic used to induce and maintain general anesthesia and to provide procedural or intensive-care sedation.

GABA receptor: A ligand-gated chloride channel that mediates much of the brain's fast inhibitory signaling. Propofol enhances this receptor's activity, reducing neuronal excitability.
Induction of anesthesia: The initial transition from wakefulness to general anesthesia. Propofol is commonly given intravenously to produce unconsciousness rapidly before surgery.
Etomidate: An intravenous anesthetic used mainly to induce general anesthesia. It generally causes less cardiovascular depression than propofol, shaping induction choices.
Respiratory depression: Reduced breathing caused by impaired respiratory drive or respiratory muscle function. Propofol can cause hypoventilation or apnea, requiring close observation and airway readiness.
Pharmacokinetics: The study of how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated. Propofol's redistribution and clearance help explain its rapid onset and offset.
Total intravenous anesthesia: General anesthesia maintained using intravenous drugs rather than inhaled anesthetics. Propofol can serve as the principal hypnotic in an entirely intravenous technique.
Ketamine: A dissociative anesthetic that produces analgesia and altered consciousness, partly through NMDA receptor blockade. Unlike propofol, ketamine often preserves breathing and provides substantial analgesia.
Hypotension: Blood pressure that is abnormally low for a person's condition. Vasodilation and reduced cardiac output can lower blood pressure after propofol administration.
Anesthetic depth: The degree of central nervous system depression produced by an anesthetic. Propofol dose is adjusted to reach a target depth while limiting excessive depression.
Procedural sedation: Medication-induced reduction in awareness used to facilitate diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. Its rapid onset and recovery make propofol useful for selected procedures.
