Knowra Prosthesis Prosthesis A prosthesis is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part or supports its function. It may restore movement, sensation, appearance, or another bodily capability.
Amputation : The surgical or traumatic removal of a limb or other body part. The level and cause of amputation shape a limb prosthesis’s design and attachment.
Osseointegration : The direct structural connection between living bone and an implanted material. It can anchor a limb prosthesis to bone instead of relying on a socket.
Lower-limb prosthesis : An artificial device that replaces part or all of a missing lower limb. Its design balances support, alignment, and walking efficiency.
Orthosis : An external device that supports, aligns, or assists a body part without replacing it. An orthosis supports existing anatomy, unlike a prosthesis replacing missing anatomy.
Rehabilitation : A process that helps restore or develop abilities after illness, injury, or disability. Training helps integrate a prosthesis into movement and daily activities.
Socket (prosthetics) : The custom interface that connects a limb prosthesis to the residual limb. Socket fit governs comfort, stability, and how forces pass between body and device.
Body-powered prosthesis : A prosthesis operated through body movement, often transmitted by cables and harnesses. It contrasts with electric systems by using the wearer’s movement as its power source.
Upper-limb prosthesis : An artificial device that replaces part or all of a missing arm or hand. It must balance grasping ability, control, weight, and appearance.
Implant : A device or tissue placed inside the body through a medical procedure. Some prostheses are implanted, but many prostheses are external devices.
Prosthetist : A healthcare professional who designs, fits, and manages prosthetic devices. Prosthetists adapt devices to anatomy, goals, and changing fit.
