Protecting group

A protecting group is a temporary chemical modification that suppresses a functional group's reactivity during a synthesis. It is later removed to restore the original group.

Protecting-group installation: A reaction that converts a functional group into a less reactive protected form. This step attaches the temporary modification before incompatible reactions.
Benzyl ether: An ether with a benzyl group attached to oxygen, often used to protect alcohols. It masks an alcohol and can often be removed by hydrogenolysis.
Functional group: A specific arrangement of atoms that gives an organic molecule characteristic chemical reactions. Protecting-group strategies begin by identifying the reactive group to mask.
Chemoselective reaction: A reaction that preferentially transforms one functional group in the presence of others. Direct chemoselectivity can avoid installing and later removing a protecting group.
Deprotection: A reaction that removes a protecting group and restores the original functional group. The synthesis must remove the group after its protective role ends.
tert-Butoxycarbonyl group: A carbamate protecting group commonly used for amines and abbreviated Boc. Boc protection helps control amine reactivity in multistep synthesis.
Organic synthesis: The deliberate construction of organic molecules through chemical reactions. Protection is a planning tool within multistep molecule construction.
Site-selective catalysis: Catalysis that favors reaction at one site among several similar sites in a molecule. Catalyst-controlled selectivity may distinguish sites without temporary modification.
Chemoselectivity: The preferential reaction of one functional group over other groups in a molecule. Protection creates selectivity when multiple groups would otherwise react.
Fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl group: A base-labile carbamate protecting group for amines, commonly abbreviated Fmoc. Fmoc provides amine protection compatible with acid-labile groups such as Boc.
