Protectorate of the Western Regions

A Han military and administrative office established around 60 BCE to oversee the oasis states of the Tarim Basin and manage Han relations with them.

Western Regions Frontier Command: A Han military command that coordinated forces and defense in the Western Regions. It organized the military presence supporting the Protectorate’s authority.

Ban Chao: A Han general and diplomat who restored Chinese influence in the Western Regions during the first century CE. His campaigns revived the kind of regional oversight first established by the Protectorate.
Wuji Colonel: A Han military officer responsible for屯田 troops and defense in the Western Regions. This officer helped maintain troops and supplies near the Protectorate’s frontier.
Zhang Qian: A Han envoy whose journeys westward in the second century BCE supplied information about Central Asian states. His reports helped persuade the Han court that western alliances and routes mattered.
