Protein synthesis inhibitor

A drug that reduces or stops protein production by binding to ribosomes or disrupting their function. Many such drugs selectively target bacterial ribosomes.

Translation (biology): The cellular process that reads messenger RNA and assembles a corresponding protein. Protein synthesis inhibitors interfere with this process, often by binding to ribosomal subunits.
Antibiotic: A substance that kills bacteria or inhibits their growth. Many protein synthesis inhibitors are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections.
Beta-lactam antibiotic: An antibiotic class that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by targeting penicillin-binding proteins. Beta-lactams attack cell-wall construction rather than ribosomal protein production.
Ribosome: A ribonucleoprotein complex that translates messenger RNA into a polypeptide. The ribosome is the direct molecular target of this drug group.
Prokaryotic ribosome: A ribosome found in bacteria and archaea, generally distinct in structure from eukaryotic cytoplasmic ribosomes. Differences from human cytoplasmic ribosomes allow many inhibitors to target bacteria selectively.
30S ribosomal subunit: The smaller subunit of a bacterial ribosome, responsible for decoding messenger RNA. Aminoglycosides and tetracyclines inhibit translation by acting on this subunit.
Bacterial infection: An illness caused by bacteria invading or multiplying in a host. Susceptible bacterial infections are the principal targets of many ribosome-directed drugs.
Fluoroquinolone: An antibiotic class that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase or topoisomerase IV, disrupting DNA replication. Fluoroquinolones target DNA-handling enzymes instead of ribosomes.
Messenger RNA: A nucleic acid that carries coding information from DNA to the protein-synthesis machinery. Translation inhibitors can alter how ribosomes read messenger RNA codons.
Mitochondrial ribosome: A ribosome inside mitochondria that synthesizes proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Its bacterial ancestry helps explain why some ribosome-targeting antibiotics also affect human cells.
