Protest

Protest is the public expression of objection or dissent, often through collective action. It can seek to change policy, challenge authority, or make grievances visible.

Civil disobedience: The deliberate breach of a law or rule to oppose an injustice, typically through a public and nonviolent act. It is a protest tactic that makes willingness to accept legal consequences part of the message.
English Bill of Rights 1689: An English statute that limited royal power and affirmed parliamentary rights after the Glorious Revolution. Its petition-right tradition helped establish public dissent as a political claim within constitutional government.
Henry David Thoreau: An American writer and philosopher whose essay “Civil Disobedience” argued for refusing cooperation with unjust government. His essay gave later protest movements a lasting argument for principled lawbreaking.
Salt March: A 1930 campaign in which Mohandas Gandhi and followers marched to the sea to make salt in defiance of British colonial law. It turned a widely felt grievance into a visible act of civil disobedience.
Civil rights movement: A broad United States movement that sought to end racial segregation and secure equal rights, especially from the 1950s through the 1960s. Its campaigns helped produce major federal laws against segregation and voting discrimination.
Demonstration (politics): A public gathering in which people display support for or opposition to a political cause. Marches and rallies make the number and visibility of dissenters apparent.
American Revolution: The political and military struggle from 1765 to 1783 that established the independence of the United States from Great Britain. Colonial boycotts, petitions, and demonstrations show protest developing into a revolutionary movement.
Mohandas Gandhi: An Indian political leader who organized campaigns of nonviolent resistance against British rule. His methods linked mass protest with disciplined nonviolence and anticolonial politics.
Montgomery bus boycott: A 1955–1956 campaign against racial segregation on public buses in Montgomery, Alabama. It demonstrates how sustained collective refusal can challenge discriminatory policy.
People Power Revolution: A largely nonviolent uprising in the Philippines in 1986 that ended Ferdinand Marcos's rule. It illustrates how mass protest can help remove an authoritarian government.
