Protistology

Protistology is the study of protists, a diverse collection of eukaryotes that are not animals, plants, or fungi. It examines their diversity, evolution, structure, physiology, and ecology.

Protist: A eukaryotic organism outside the traditional categories of animals, plants, and fungi. The organisms protistology investigates are defined by this broad, historically useful grouping.

Eukaryote: An organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound compartments. Protists are eukaryotes, and their cellular complexity shapes the field’s methods.
Flagellum: A long cellular appendage that propels a cell or moves fluid using a whip-like motion. Flagella power movement in many protists, though their structure differs across major lineages.
Giardiasis: An intestinal infection caused by the flagellated protist Giardia duodenalis. Its transmission and diagnosis illustrate the public-health importance of protist parasites.
John Hogg: A British naturalist who proposed the kingdom Protoctista in 1860. His proposal anticipated later classifications that grouped many simple organisms together.
Metabarcoding: The identification of organisms in mixed samples by sequencing standardized genetic markers. It expands surveys of protist communities while leaving abundance and organismal identity difficult to infer.
