Proto-writing

Proto-writing is a system of graphic symbols that communicates information without consistently representing the sounds or grammar of a spoken language. It can record quantities, names, or ideas without encoding complete spoken utterances.

Token system: A system of shaped clay objects used in the ancient Near East to represent goods and quantities. Tokens show how physical counters could store economic information before writing.
Uruk period: A period of Mesopotamian urbanization, approximately 4000–3100 BCE, associated with early administrative records. Late Uruk records provide some of the earliest evidence for proto-writing.
Writing system: A conventional set of visual signs and rules for representing language in a durable form. Proto-writing is commonly distinguished from systems that represent spoken language systematically.
Phonographic writing: A writing method in which signs represent speech sounds, such as syllables or phonemes. Proto-writing lacks the consistent sound representation that defines phonographic writing.
Bullae: Hollow clay envelopes used in the ancient Near East to contain and secure counters or impressions. Bullae preserved counters and their impressions, linking objects to durable records.
Uruk accounting tablets: Late fourth-millennium BCE clay tablets from Uruk bearing numerical and commodity signs. These tablets document record-keeping that did not yet consistently transcribe speech.
Speech: The production and perception of spoken language through vocal sounds. Proto-writing can communicate without systematically encoding the speech it accompanies.
Alphabet: A writing system whose letters represent phonemes or other basic sound units of a language. An alphabet encodes pronunciation systematically, unlike proto-writing.
Numerical notation: A system of written signs for representing numbers and numerical relationships. Numerical signs can communicate quantities without spelling spoken words.
Clay token hypothesis: Denise Schmandt-Besserat’s proposal that Near Eastern clay tokens contributed to the development of writing. The hypothesis connects earlier counting practices to the emergence of administrative signs.
