Province of New Hampshire

The Province of New Hampshire was a British colony in North America, established in 1629 and replaced by the state of New Hampshire in 1776.

John Mason: An English colonizer who received a 1629 grant of land that included the territory of New Hampshire. His grant gave the province its name and became the basis for English claims to the region.
Massachusetts Bay Colony: An English colony established in 1630 whose government expanded its authority over neighboring settlements in New England. Its governments repeatedly absorbed or administered New Hampshire during disputes over colonial jurisdiction.
John Wentworth: The last royal governor of New Hampshire, serving from 1767 until the collapse of royal government in 1775. His departure marked the end of effective royal rule in the province.
New Hampshire Constitution of 1776: The constitution adopted by New Hampshire in January 1776, establishing a government independent of royal authority. It formalized the province’s move to self-government before the Declaration of Independence.
Council for New England: An English company established in 1620 to promote colonization in North America between the fortieth and forty-eighth parallels. It issued the land grants from which Mason’s New Hampshire claim developed.
New Hampshire Grants: Land grants issued by New Hampshire west of the Connecticut River in the eighteenth century, in territory also claimed by New York. The dispute over these grants exposed the province’s contested western boundary.
John Cutt: A New Hampshire merchant who served as president of the province’s first separate government from 1679 to 1681. His presidency began the colony’s distinct administration after separation from Massachusetts.
New Hampshire: A U.S. state in New England, admitted to the Union in 1788 as the ninth state. The state succeeded the province and retained its name and much of its territory.
Piscataqua River: A river forming much of the boundary between present-day New Hampshire and Maine before reaching the Atlantic at Portsmouth Harbor. English settlements along its estuary formed the province’s earliest center.
Benning Wentworth: The royal governor of New Hampshire from 1741 to 1766, known for issuing land grants west of the Connecticut River. His grants provoked New York’s challenge to New Hampshire’s western claims.
