Provinces of Japan

Provinces, or kuni, were historical territorial divisions of Japan, used from ancient times until the modern prefecture system replaced them in the late 19th century.

Gokishichidō: A system that organized Japan into five central provinces and seven wider circuits. It grouped the provinces into a larger framework for administration and travel.
Taika Reform: A series of seventh-century political reforms that strengthened centralized rule in Japan. The reforms helped establish provinces as units of imperial administration.
Yamato Province: A historical province in the Kinai region, centered on present-day Nara Prefecture. It was the heartland of early Japanese imperial power.
Prefectures of Japan: Japan’s current first-level administrative divisions, established during the Meiji period. Prefectures replaced provinces as official administrative units.
Ritsuryō: A Japanese system of centralized government based on Chinese legal and administrative models. Its laws formalized provincial administration under the imperial state.
Taihō Code: A legal and administrative code promulgated in Japan in 701. It codified the central government's provincial organization.
Musashi Province: A historical province covering much of present-day Tokyo and parts of Saitama and Kanagawa prefectures. Its territory became central to the later rise of Edo and Tokyo.
Han system: The early-modern system of domains ruled by daimyō under the Tokugawa shogunate. Domains, unlike provinces, were the principal units of political rule in the Edo period.
Kokushi: Officials appointed by Japan's central government to govern provinces. They exercised central authority within each province.
Kokushi (governor): A central-government-appointed governor responsible for a Japanese province. This office shows how provincial rule was carried out in practice.
