Provisions of Oxford

The Provisions of Oxford were constitutional reforms imposed on Henry III by his barons in 1258. They placed royal government under the oversight of a council and helped trigger conflict over the king’s authority.

Council of Fifteen: A council appointed under the Provisions of Oxford to advise the king and supervise royal government. It was the central body through which the barons intended to constrain Henry III’s government.
Henry III of England: King of England from 1216 to 1272, whose long reign included baronial revolt and major constitutional conflict. His rule was the target of the barons’ proposed controls.
