Proxemics

Proxemics is the study of how people use interpersonal distance and space in social interaction. It examines how spatial behavior communicates relationships, intentions, and cultural expectations.

Personal space: The area around a person whose intrusion can cause discomfort or prompt protective behavior. Proxemics studies how people regulate this area during social encounters.
Nonverbal communication: Communication through behavior and signals other than spoken or written words. Proxemics is one way nonverbal communication conveys social information.
Edward T. Hall: An American anthropologist who developed proxemics and studied intercultural communication. Hall introduced the term and gave proxemics its influential framework.
Environmental psychology: The study of how people interact with and are affected by their environments. It examines how spatial arrangements influence comfort, behavior, and social contact.
Chronemics: The study of how time is used and interpreted in communication. Chronemics examines timing, while proxemics focuses on interpersonal space.
Interpersonal distance: The physical separation between people during an interaction. Its variation is proxemics’ most direct observable measure.
Haptics: The study of touch as a form of communication and social behavior. Touch and distance jointly shape how people manage interpersonal boundaries.
The Hidden Dimension: Edward T. Hall’s 1966 book about how people perceive and use space. The book presented proxemics to a broad audience and described distance zones.
Urban design: The planning and design of the physical features of cities and public spaces. Public-space layouts influence opportunities for proximity, privacy, and encounter.
Territory (animal behavior): An area defended by an animal or group against others of the same or different species. Territory concerns defended areas; proxemics also studies moment-to-moment interpersonal spacing.
