Knowra Proxy war Proxy war A proxy war is an armed conflict in which outside powers support opposing forces while avoiding direct combat against one another. Support can include weapons, funding, training, intelligence, or personnel.
Foreign intervention : The involvement of an external state in another country’s political or military affairs. Proxy wars are one form of intervention, distinguished by support for local forces rather than direct interstate combat.
Spanish Civil War : The 1936–1939 conflict between Spain’s Republican government and Nationalist rebels, backed by foreign powers. German and Italian aid to Franco and Soviet aid to the Republic made the war a major prewar proxy struggle.
Ernesto Che Guevara : An Argentine Marxist revolutionary who helped lead the Cuban Revolution and promoted armed insurgency abroad. His campaigns in Congo and Bolivia show how revolutionary networks tried to spread conflict beyond a sponsor’s home state.
War by proxy : A phrase for pursuing conflict through intermediaries rather than fighting directly. It is often used interchangeably with proxy war, but can describe indirect competition beyond armed conflicts.
War termination : The process by which armed conflict ends through victory, settlement, ceasefire, or other means. Sponsors can prolong fighting by sustaining allies, but their leverage can also help bring combatants to negotiations.
Military aid : Weapons, equipment, training, or services provided to another state or armed group for military purposes. Arms and training let sponsors strengthen an ally while limiting their own battlefield presence.
Korean War : The 1950–1953 war between North Korea and South Korea, joined by Chinese forces and a United Nations coalition. The United States and China fought through opposing Korean sides, while the Soviet Union supported North Korea without openly entering the war.
Fidel Castro : The Cuban revolutionary leader who governed Cuba from 1959 to 2008. Cuba supported revolutionary movements and intervened militarily in conflicts including Angola.
Interstate war : An armed conflict in which the principal combatants are sovereign states. Unlike a proxy war, an interstate war places states themselves in direct combat.
Conflict duration : The length of time between the beginning and end of an armed conflict. External resources can allow combatants to continue fighting after their own capacity would otherwise falter.
