Prussian Crusade

The Prussian Crusade was a series of 13th-century campaigns by the Teutonic Order and its allies to conquer Prussian lands and convert their pagan inhabitants to Christianity.

Teutonic Order: A Catholic military order founded during the Crusades that established a territorial state in Prussia. The Order organized the campaigns and became the principal ruler of conquered Prussian lands.
Papal bull of 1234: A papal decree of Gregory IX that placed the Teutonic Order’s Prussian conquests under the protection of the Holy See. It secured papal backing for the Order’s territorial project in Prussia.
Hermann von Salza: Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1209 to 1239, known for securing imperial and papal support for the Order. His diplomacy helped prepare the institutional and legal foundations for the Prussian venture.
Battle of Durbe: A 1260 battle in which Samogitian forces defeated the Teutonic Order and its allies in present-day Latvia. The defeat helped trigger the Great Prussian Uprising and other revolts against the Order.
