Prussian military reforms

Changes to Prussia’s army and military institutions, especially after its defeat by Napoleon in 1806. They reorganized military command, recruitment, training, and the relationship between the army and society.

Prussian Army: The land forces of the Kingdom of Prussia, a major European military power from the seventeenth century to 1918. The institution these reforms reorganized and sought to make more effective.
Battle of Jena–Auerstedt: A pair of decisive battles fought on 14 October 1806, in which Napoleon’s forces defeated the Prussian army. The defeat exposed the army’s weaknesses and made sweeping change politically unavoidable.
Hermann von Boyen: A Prussian general and statesman who helped implement military reforms and later served as minister of war. He carried reform measures into later administrations and helped shape the Landwehr.
War of the Sixth Coalition: The 1813–1814 coalition war that drove Napoleon from Germany and culminated in his first abdication. Prussia mobilized its reorganized forces to return to war against Napoleon.
Prussian Landtag: The representative assembly of Prussia, established in 1849 and composed of two chambers. Disputes over army funding later brought military reform into conflict with representative government.
Krümpersystem: A system that trained short-term recruits and released them early to make room for additional conscripts under Napoleon-era restrictions. It expanded the pool of trained reserves without exceeding France’s limits on Prussian troop strength.
Treaty of Tilsit: The 1807 agreement that ended Prussia’s war with Napoleon and sharply reduced its territory and military capacity. Its restrictions forced reformers to rebuild military strength under French oversight.
Carl von Clausewitz: A Prussian general and military theorist whose writings include the posthumously published On War. He worked within the reform circle and connected military organization to political purpose.
Battle of Leipzig: The 1813 battle in which coalition forces decisively defeated Napoleon near Leipzig. Prussian troops fought as part of the coalition victory that ended French dominance in Germany.
Prussian constitutional conflict: The 1860s struggle between the Prussian crown and parliament over the army budget and constitutional authority. It exposed tensions between the reformed army’s expansion and civilian oversight.
