Psamtik III

Psamtik III was the last pharaoh of Egypt’s Twenty-sixth Dynasty, ruling briefly in 526–525 BCE before Persia conquered Egypt.

Battle of Pelusium: A battle in 525 BCE in which Persian forces defeated Egypt during Cambyses II’s invasion. The defeat opened the route to Memphis and ended Psamtik III’s rule.
Psamtik I: The founder of Egypt’s Twenty-sixth Dynasty, who reunified Egypt and ruled from about 664 to 610 BCE. His reign began the dynasty that ended with Psamtik III.
Achaemenid conquest of Egypt: The Persian takeover of Egypt in 525 BCE under Cambyses II. It removed Psamtik III and ended native rule for the period.
Herodotus: A Greek historian of the fifth century BCE whose Histories recount conflicts between Greeks and Persians. His account supplies much of the surviving narrative about Cambyses’ conquest of Egypt.
Cambyses II: The Achaemenid Persian king who conquered Egypt in 525 BCE. His invasion displaced Psamtik III and brought Egypt under Persian rule.
Saïs: An ancient Egyptian city in the western Nile Delta and the political center of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty. The dynasty’s Saite rulers based their authority in this Delta city.
Achaemenid Egypt: Egypt under the rule of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, beginning with its conquest in 525 BCE. Psamtik’s defeat inaugurated this phase of Persian administration.
Diodorus Siculus: A Greek historian of the first century BCE who wrote a universal history known as the Bibliotheca historica. His later narrative offers another ancient account of the Persian invasion.
Amasis II: The Egyptian pharaoh who ruled from about 570 to 526 BCE before Psamtik III. Psamtik inherited the throne from Amasis as the Persian threat approached.
Assyrian conquest of Egypt: The series of Assyrian invasions that brought much of Egypt under Assyrian control in the seventh century BCE. The upheaval preceded the dynasty founded by Psamtik I.
