Psilocin

Psilocin is a naturally occurring psychoactive tryptamine and the active metabolite of psilocybin. It alters perception chiefly through serotonin receptors, especially 5-HT2A.

Psilocybin: A naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug that the body converts into psilocin. This precursor becomes psilocin after ingestion through removal of a phosphate group.
Psilocybin-assisted therapy: A therapeutic approach combining supervised psilocybin administration with psychological support. Psilocin is the active compound thought to produce the acute experience studied in this treatment.
LSD: A potent synthetic psychedelic that acts primarily through serotonin receptors. LSD produces overlapping psychedelic effects but is chemically distinct and is not formed from psilocybin.
Albert Hofmann: A Swiss chemist who isolated and synthesized LSD and studied psychoactive compounds from mushrooms. Hofmann and colleagues isolated psilocin and psilocybin from Mexican mushrooms in the late 1950s.
Psychedelic therapy: A treatment approach using psychedelic substances alongside psychological preparation and support. Its outcomes may depend on drug effects, therapy, expectations, and setting, not psilocin alone.
5-HT2A receptor: A serotonin receptor that mediates many effects of classic psychedelic drugs. Psilocin activates this receptor, which is central to its psychedelic action.
Major depressive disorder: A mood disorder marked by persistent low mood or loss of interest and other symptoms. Clinical trials examine whether psilocybin’s conversion to psilocin can reduce depressive symptoms.
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine: A naturally occurring psychedelic tryptamine with a short-lived effect when inhaled. It shares a tryptamine scaffold with psilocin but has different duration and pharmacology.
Roger Heim: A French mycologist who documented psychoactive mushroom species in Mexico. Heim supplied and identified mushrooms whose compounds were later isolated as psilocin and psilocybin.
Default mode network: A set of interacting brain regions more active during internally focused thought. Researchers investigate how psilocin-related changes in this network relate to altered self-experience.
