Psychedelic drug

A psychoactive substance that can markedly alter perception, thought, and mood, sometimes producing vivid sensory experiences and changes in the sense of self.

Serotonin 5-HT2A receptor: A serotonin receptor in the brain that mediates many effects of classic psychedelic drugs. It is the principal molecular target linked to classic psychedelic effects.
Classic psychedelic: A drug whose characteristic psychedelic effects are mediated primarily by serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This pharmacological subgroup includes many substances commonly meant by the term psychedelic.
Psychedelic therapy: A therapeutic approach combining a psychedelic drug with preparation, supervised sessions, and follow-up support. It uses the drug experience within a structured clinical intervention rather than as a standalone treatment.
Peyote: A small cactus containing mescaline, used ceremonially by Indigenous peoples of North America. Its ceremonial use predates modern scientific study of psychedelic drugs.
Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder: A condition involving persistent or recurrent perceptual disturbances after hallucinogen use. It is an uncommon but recognized possible lasting consequence of hallucinogen exposure.
Default mode network: A set of interacting brain regions active during internally directed thought and self-referential cognition. Changes in its activity and connectivity have been associated with altered self-experience.
Lysergic acid diethylamide: A potent synthetic psychedelic drug commonly known as LSD. LSD is a prominent example of a classic psychedelic.
Psilocybin therapy for depression: A clinical approach that pairs psilocybin administration with psychological support to treat depression. Trials examine whether psilocybin-assisted sessions can reduce depressive symptoms.
Ayahuasca: A psychoactive brew traditionally prepared from Amazonian plants, including a source of DMT and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. It shows how traditional preparations combine plant compounds to make oral DMT active.
Psychedelic-induced psychosis: A psychotic state temporally associated with psychedelic drug use. Acute drug effects can sometimes precipitate severe confusion, paranoia, or psychotic symptoms.
