Psychoacoustics

Psychoacoustics studies how people perceive and interpret sound, including how physical properties of sound relate to sensations such as pitch, loudness, and timbre.

Auditory system: The sensory system that detects sound and processes it into neural signals. Psychoacoustics connects acoustic stimuli to the responses produced by this system.
Sound pressure level: A logarithmic measure of sound pressure relative to a reference pressure. It gives psychoacoustic experiments a physical measure to compare with perceived loudness.

A-weighting: A frequency weighting used in sound-level measurements to approximate human hearing sensitivity. It applies perceptual sensitivity to environmental noise measurement.
Ernst Heinrich Weber: A German physiologist whose experiments helped establish quantitative study of sensation. Weber’s work on sensory discrimination shaped methods for measuring auditory thresholds.
Auditory neuroscience: The study of neural structures and processes involved in hearing. It emphasizes brain mechanisms, while psychoacoustics characterizes perceptual outcomes.
