Psychological thriller

A suspense genre in which characters’ mental states, motives, and perceptions drive conflict, often making danger uncertain or difficult to interpret.

Suspense: A state of anxious anticipation about uncertain outcomes in a story. The genre builds suspense by making motives, danger, and perception uncertain.
Narrative misdirection: The deliberate steering of an audience toward a mistaken interpretation of a story. Misleading clues sustain uncertainty about characters’ motives and events.
Rebecca (novel): Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel about a newly married woman living at the estate of her husband’s first wife. Its narrator’s insecurity and the absent Rebecca make perception itself a source of suspense.

Mystery fiction: A genre organized around uncovering the solution to a concealed crime or puzzle. A mystery foregrounds solving an unknown; psychological suspense may leave perception unresolved.
Dramatic irony: A gap between what an audience knows and what a character knows. Unequal knowledge can make a character’s choices more tense and consequential.
Point of view (narrative): The position or perspective from which a narrative presents events and information. Restricted perspective controls which evidence about danger becomes available.
