Psychopathy

Psychopathy is a personality construct marked by callousness, shallow emotion, manipulativeness, and persistent antisocial behavior. It is studied through trait models and assessment tools, but is not a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR.

Antisocial personality disorder: A personality disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of disregarding and violating others’ rights. It is the closest DSM diagnosis, but does not capture psychopathy’s full emotional and interpersonal profile.
Fearlessness: A disposition toward low fear responses in situations that commonly provoke threat or anxiety. Reduced sensitivity to punishment may help explain persistent rule-breaking in some psychopathy models.
Hervey Cleckley: An American psychiatrist whose clinical descriptions shaped modern conceptions of psychopathy. His case-based account emphasized emotional and interpersonal features beyond criminality.
Sociopathy: A nonformal term commonly used for antisocial behavior attributed to social or environmental influences. It is often treated as a synonym, though usage and implied causes vary.
Triarchic model of psychopathy: A model organizing psychopathic traits into boldness, meanness, and disinhibition. It offers a competing structure to checklist-based accounts of the construct.
Callous-unemotional traits: A pattern of low empathy, guilt, and concern for others, studied especially in children and adolescents. These traits capture an affective component central to many models of psychopathy.
Moral disengagement: Cognitive processes that let people justify harmful conduct while avoiding self-condemnation. It offers one account of how callous attitudes can coexist with deliberate harmful acts.
Robert D. Hare: A Canadian psychologist known for developing influential psychopathy assessment measures. His work made structured assessment central to contemporary research.
Narcissistic personality disorder: A personality disorder involving grandiosity, need for admiration, and impaired empathy. Narcissistic traits can resemble psychopathy’s interpersonal style but do not define the construct.
Psychopathy and violence: The study of associations between psychopathic traits and violent behavior. Researchers distinguish elevated group-level risk from claims that psychopathy inevitably leads to violence.
