Public health emergency

A public health emergency is an event or threat posing substantial risk to population health and requiring coordinated public-health action.

Public health surveillance: The ongoing collection and analysis of health data to guide action against disease and other health threats. Surveillance can detect emerging threats and track whether emergency measures are working.
COVID-19 pandemic: The global pandemic caused by the spread of SARS-CoV-2 beginning in 2019. It illustrates a prolonged emergency requiring coordinated action across countries and sectors.
Public health: The organized effort to protect and improve the health of populations through collective action. Emergency action is one intensive form of public health practice.
Health equity: The principle that everyone should have a fair opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Emergencies often intensify pre-existing disparities in exposure, illness, and access to care.
Incident command system: A standardized structure for coordinating personnel and resources during an emergency response. It organizes agencies and responders around shared objectives during a health emergency.
1918 influenza pandemic: A global influenza pandemic that caused tens of millions of deaths from 1918 to 1920. Its scale and uneven impact remain central to pandemic preparedness.
Communicable disease: An illness caused by an infectious agent that can spread between people or through other routes. Infectious diseases are a common source of public-health emergencies.
Quarantine: The separation or restriction of movement of people exposed to a contagious disease during its incubation period. Quarantine can limit transmission but imposes substantial burdens on affected people.
Emergency operations center: A facility or virtual structure where an organization coordinates emergency information, decisions, and resources. Public-health agencies use it to coordinate response across jurisdictions and organizations.
Ebola outbreak in West Africa: The 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. It demonstrates how fragile health systems can magnify an infectious-disease emergency.
