Public holiday

A day designated by a government or other authority when the public, or specified groups, are generally entitled to time off work.

Holiday pay: Compensation employees receive for time off on a holiday or for working during it. Employment laws and contracts determine whether a designated day brings paid leave or premium pay.
National day: An annual observance celebrating a nation, its founding, or its identity. A national day becomes a public holiday only where authorities designate it as one.
Feast day: A date in a religious calendar commemorating a sacred event or figure. Many public holidays developed from established religious feast days.
Long weekend: A period of consecutive days off created when a holiday adjoins a weekend. A holiday near a weekend can extend leisure and travel beyond one day.

Labor Day: A holiday recognizing workers and the labor movement, observed on different dates across countries. Its designation reflects campaigns to make workers' rest a public matter.
Holiday effect: A change in behavior or measured outcomes associated with a holiday period. Closures and altered routines can affect economic statistics, health, and daily activity.
Employment discrimination: Unfair treatment in employment based on a protected or otherwise improper ground. Unequal access to holiday leave can raise questions of fairness and discrimination.
