Pudong
Pudong is a district of Shanghai on the eastern bank of the Huangpu River. It developed into a major financial, commercial, and industrial center.
Shanghai Pudong Development Zone: A development zone established in Pudong to attract investment and build an international financial and commercial center. Its creation marked the start of Pudong’s state-led transformation.
Shanghai Stock Exchange: A securities exchange based in Shanghai that operates mainland China’s principal stock market alongside Shenzhen’s exchange. Its modern trading venue in Pudong anchors the district’s financial role.
Lujiazui Financial City: A financial and business district in Pudong, Shanghai, centered on Lujiazui. It concentrates banks, securities firms, and corporate headquarters in Pudong.
Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower: A telecommunications and observation tower in Lujiazui, Shanghai, completed in 1994. Its early prominence made Pudong’s development visible across the Huangpu River.
Reform and Opening Up: China’s program of economic reform and expanded engagement with the global economy, launched in 1978. Pudong’s development became one of the program’s most visible urban projects.
Shanghai Tower: A 632-meter skyscraper in Lujiazui, Shanghai, completed in 2015. The tower represents the scale and density of Pudong’s central business district.
Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone: A trade and logistics zone in Pudong, Shanghai, established as part of China’s earliest bonded-zone experiments. It shows how Pudong supports international commerce as well as finance.
Shanghai World Financial Center: A 492-meter skyscraper in Lujiazui, Shanghai, completed in 2008. Its construction marked the rapid vertical growth of Pudong’s financial district.
Deng Xiaoping: The Chinese leader who guided economic reforms and China’s opening to foreign investment from the late 1970s. His 1992 southern tour helped renew momentum for Pudong’s development.
Pudong International Airport: Shanghai’s major international airport, located in eastern Pudong and opened in 1999. It connects Pudong’s commercial center with global passenger and cargo networks.
