Pugachev's Rebellion

A major uprising in the Russian Empire from 1773 to 1775, led by Don Cossack Yemelyan Pugachev and supported by Cossacks, peasants, and other groups. It challenged Catherine the Great’s rule across the Volga and Ural regions.

Yemelyan Pugachev: A Don Cossack who led the 1773–1775 uprising by claiming to be the deposed emperor Peter III. His assumed imperial identity gave the rebellion a claimant around whom supporters could rally.
Yaik River: A river in western Kazakhstan and Russia, called the Yaik until it was renamed the Ural in 1775. The uprising began among Cossacks living along its banks.
Battle of Kazan (1774): A battle in July 1774 in which Pugachev’s forces captured and then lost Kazan. The brief capture marked the rebellion’s farthest major advance into an imperial center.
Stenka Razin's Rebellion: A major Cossack-led uprising against the Russian state in the 1670s, led by Stepan Razin. It offers an earlier comparison for the alliance of frontier fighters and discontented peasants.
