Pulitzer Prize

The Pulitzer Prizes are annual awards recognizing achievements in journalism, literature, and music. Columbia University administers them under the direction of the Pulitzer Prize Board.

Pulitzer Prize Board: The body that oversees the Pulitzer Prizes and selects their recipients. It directs the awards and makes final selections from category juries’ recommendations.
Joseph Pulitzer: A Hungarian-born American newspaper publisher whose bequest established the Pulitzer Prizes and Columbia’s journalism school. His will provided the endowment and called for awards in journalism, letters, and drama.
Hiroshima (book): John Hersey’s 1946 account of six survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The 1946 book award honored journalism published as a sustained narrative.
National Book Award: An American literary prize honoring books published in the United States. It recognizes books across genres but is organized separately from the Pulitzers.
Investigative journalism: Journalism that uncovers facts about matters of public interest through sustained research and reporting. Pulitzer recognition has amplified investigations that exposed corruption and institutional abuse.

To Kill a Mockingbird: Harper Lee’s 1960 novel about racial injustice and childhood in the American South. Its 1961 fiction award is among the prizes’ best-known literary honors.
Booker Prize: A literary prize for a novel written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. Its international eligibility differs from the Pulitzers’ American literary categories.
Muckraker: A journalist who exposes corruption or social problems through investigative reporting. The prizes grew from a tradition of reform-minded journalism associated with Pulitzer’s era.
