Pulpwood

Pulpwood is timber processed into fibrous pulp for making paper, cardboard, and other cellulose-based products. It commonly comes from small-diameter trees, low-grade logs, and wood-processing residues.

Wood pulp: A fibrous material made by separating cellulose fibers from wood for use in paper and other products. Pulping converts pulpwood into the fiber furnish used to form paper.
Newsprint: Low-cost paper used chiefly for printing newspapers and other short-lived publications. Mechanical pulp from pulpwood provides bulk and opacity for many newsprint grades.
Cellulose: A structural polysaccharide that forms the main load-bearing component of plant cell walls. Its fibers are the principal structural material retained in paper pulp.
Deforestation: The lasting removal of forest cover, often through conversion to another land use. Poorly managed pulpwood sourcing can contribute to forest loss.
Kraft process: A chemical pulping method that cooks wood chips in alkaline liquor to separate cellulose fibers. It is a major industrial route for turning pulpwood into strong pulp.
Packaging paper: Paper grades designed for wrapping, bags, and protective packaging. Chemical pulp from pulpwood supplies strength to many packaging papers.
Wood fiber: A slender cell from wood that contributes strength and structure to pulp and paper. Fiber length and strength shape the quality of pulpwood-derived paper.
Forest plantation: A forest established and managed primarily to produce timber or other forest products. Plantations supply a substantial share of pulpwood in some regions.
Mechanical pulping: Pulp production that separates wood fibers mainly through mechanical grinding or refining. This route retains more of pulpwood’s lignin than chemical pulping does.
Paperboard: Thick, stiff paper material used in cartons, boxes, and other packaging. Pulpwood fibers form much of the furnish for paperboard products.
