Pump and treat

Pump and treat is a groundwater remediation method that extracts contaminated water through wells, treats it aboveground, and manages the treated water or treatment residuals.

Groundwater extraction: The removal of groundwater through wells or other engineered systems. Pumping wells draw contaminated water toward the treatment system.
Groundwater contamination: The presence of harmful chemicals or substances in water beneath Earth's surface. Pump and treat is applied to contamination dissolved in aquifers.
Contaminant plume: A body of contaminated groundwater moving through an aquifer from a source area. Its extent and movement guide well placement and performance evaluation.
In situ chemical oxidation: A remediation method that injects oxidants into contaminated soil or groundwater to destroy chemicals underground. It treats contamination in place rather than extracting water for aboveground treatment.
Capture zone: The area from which groundwater flows toward a pumping well. Its boundaries show whether extraction controls the contaminated plume.
Dense non-aqueous phase liquid: A liquid contaminant denser than water that can sink through groundwater and persist as a separate phase. Residual DNAPL can continue dissolving after pumping reduces dissolved contamination.
Groundwater remediation: The reduction or control of contamination in groundwater to protect people and ecosystems. Pump and treat is one engineered approach within groundwater cleanup.
Permeable reactive barrier: An underground treatment zone that intercepts groundwater and removes or transforms contaminants as water passes through. It treats flowing groundwater passively, without continuous extraction wells.
Air stripping: A treatment process that transfers volatile compounds from water into a flowing air stream. It removes volatile contaminants from extracted groundwater.
Volatile organic compounds: Carbon-containing chemicals that readily evaporate under ordinary environmental conditions. Many volatile compounds can be stripped from extracted groundwater.
