Purebred

A purebred animal descends from parents of the same recognized breed, with ancestry recorded or otherwise established. Breed standards and registries define how that ancestry is documented.

Animal breed: A population of domesticated animals distinguished by shared traits and maintained through selective breeding. Purebred status depends on membership in a recognized breed.
Closed studbook: A breeding registry that accepts no animals whose ancestry is not already recorded in that population. Closing the studbook limits which animals can enter a purebred lineage.
Genetic diversity: The variety of genetic differences among individuals in a population. Breed boundaries and restricted mating can reduce variation within a population.
Crossbreed: An animal produced by mating individuals from different breeds. A crossbreed has mixed breed ancestry rather than parents of the same recognized breed.
Pedigree: A record of an animal’s ancestors, often used to establish lineage and breeding relationships. Pedigrees provide documentary evidence of purebred ancestry.
Inbreeding: Reproduction between individuals that are more closely related than average in a population. Restricted mating pools can increase relatedness among purebred animals.
Inherited disease: A disorder caused by genetic variants transmitted from parents to offspring. Some breed populations have elevated frequencies of particular inherited disorders.
Mixed-breed dog: A dog whose ancestry includes more than one breed or is not assigned to a single breed. Mixed-breed dogs contrast with dogs whose lineage is documented within one breed.
Breed registry: An organization that records animals and their ancestry according to rules for a particular breed. Registries set and verify the ancestry requirements for recognized purebreds.
Genetic bottleneck: A sharp reduction in population size that leaves the surviving population with less genetic variation. Small founding populations can narrow the genetic diversity of a breed.
