Purse seine

A fishing net that encircles a school of fish and closes underneath like a drawstring bag, trapping the fish inside.

Seine fishing: A fishing method that surrounds fish with a long net and draws it toward a vessel or shore. Purse seining is the offshore, closing-net form of this broader fishing method.
Skipjack tuna: A fast-swimming tuna species found in warm ocean waters worldwide. It is a major target of purse-seine fisheries, especially in tropical waters.
Bycatch: The unintended capture of species or individuals during fishing. A set may enclose non-target animals along with the intended school.
Trawling: A fishing method that tows a net through the water or along the seabed. Unlike a purse seine, a trawl captures fish by towing its net rather than encircling a school.

Dolphin-safe tuna: Tuna marketed under standards intended to avoid dolphin deaths during fishing. Dolphin mortality in tuna purse seining prompted labeling rules and changes to fishing practice.
Longline fishing: A fishing method that uses a main line carrying many baited hooks. Longlines catch fish individually on hooks instead of enclosing whole schools.
Netting: A mesh material made by knotting or joining strands into a network. The netting forms the wall that surrounds the school during a set.
Anchoveta: A small schooling fish native to the southeastern Pacific, especially abundant off Peru. Purse seines catch anchoveta in one of the world’s largest single-species fisheries.
