Pushyamitra Shunga

Pushyamitra Shunga founded the Shunga dynasty and ruled much of northern India after overthrowing the last Mauryan emperor around 185 BCE.

Mauryan Empire: An ancient South Asian empire founded by Chandragupta Maurya and expanded under Ashoka. Pushyamitra’s seizure of power ended the empire’s ruling line.
Agnimitra: A Shunga king who succeeded Pushyamitra and is the central character of Kalidasa’s play Malavikagnimitra. As Pushyamitra’s son and successor, he continued the dynasty’s rule.
Ayodhya inscription of Dhanadeva: An ancient inscription from Ayodhya that names Pushyamitra and refers to his performance of two horse sacrifices. It is a key epigraphic source for claims about his royal rites.
Ashoka: A Mauryan emperor whose inscriptions describe his support for Buddhist institutions and ethical governance. Later accounts cast Pushyamitra as a sharp religious contrast to Ashoka.
Brihadratha Maurya: The last Mauryan emperor, killed during a military review by his commander Pushyamitra. His assassination cleared the way for Pushyamitra’s accession.

Malavikagnimitra: A Sanskrit play by Kalidasa centered on the Shunga prince Agnimitra and events at his court. Its dramatic setting offers a later literary depiction of Pushyamitra’s family and court.
Divyavadana: A collection of Buddhist narratives in Sanskrit that includes stories about Ashoka and Pushyamitra. Its account of Buddhist persecution strongly influenced Pushyamitra’s later reputation.
Shunga dynasty: An ancient Indian dynasty that ruled parts of northern India after the Mauryan Empire. Pushyamitra founded the dynasty that bore his name.
Patanjali: An ancient Sanskrit grammarian traditionally associated with the Mahabhashya commentary on Panini. His grammatical examples are often used to place Ashvamedha performances in Pushyamitra’s era.
