Puy de Dôme

Puy de Dôme is a dormant volcanic summit in France’s Chaîne des Puys, rising above the Limagne plain near Clermont-Ferrand. Its steep road climb became famous through repeated Tour de France stages.

1964 Tour de France: The Tour de France edition won by Jacques Anquetil, remembered for its decisive mountain stage at Puy de Dôme. Raymond Poulidor attacked Anquetil on the summit climb, creating one of cycling’s iconic duels.
Chaîne des Puys: A chain of young volcanic landforms in the French Massif Central, including cones, domes, and craters. Puy de Dôme is the chain’s best-known lava dome.
Puy de Dôme Observatory: A meteorological and atmospheric research station on the summit of Puy de Dôme. Its exposed summit position supports long-running measurements of weather and atmospheric composition.
Limagne rift: A Cenozoic extensional basin in central France, bordered by the Massif Central’s volcanic uplands. The summit stands above the Limagne basin, whose tectonic setting accompanied regional volcanism.
Raymond Poulidor: A French cyclist whose long career included three second-place finishes in the Tour de France. His 1964 climb beside Jacques Anquetil made the mountain a symbol of his rivalry with the champion.
Lava dome: A steep-sided volcanic mound formed when viscous lava accumulates near a vent. Its summit formed from viscous trachytic lava that piled up rather than flowing far.
Cloud physics: The study of how clouds form, evolve, and produce precipitation. The summit observatory provides measurements of clouds and aerosols in the free atmosphere.
Massif Central: A mountainous upland region occupying much of south-central France. Puy de Dôme belongs to this region’s volcanic landscape.
Jacques Anquetil: A French road cyclist who won the Tour de France five times between 1957 and 1964. He defended the yellow jersey against Poulidor on Puy de Dôme in 1964.
Trachyte: A fine-grained volcanic rock rich in alkali feldspar and typically low in silica compared with rhyolite. Trachyte makes up much of the summit dome and records its viscous magma.
