Pyramid of Djoser

The Pyramid of Djoser is a six-tiered stone monument at Saqqara, built as the Third Dynasty pharaoh’s tomb. Traditionally credited to Imhotep, it transformed royal burial architecture.

Mastaba: A flat-roofed ancient Egyptian tomb with a rectangular superstructure and sloping sides. The pyramid began as a mastaba before successive enlargements produced its stepped form.
Step pyramid: A pyramid whose sides rise in a series of receding horizontal levels. The monument’s six stacked tiers define this architectural form.
Imhotep: An Egyptian official and architect traditionally associated with Djoser’s step pyramid. Later tradition credits him with designing the monument and its complex.
South Tomb: A monumental underground tomb structure in the southern part of Djoser’s Saqqara complex. Its purpose remains debated, making it a revealing counterpart to the pyramid tomb.
Saqqara: An ancient Egyptian necropolis on the west bank of the Nile near Memphis. The pyramid stands within this burial landscape, beside tombs from several periods.
Pyramid complex: A royal funerary precinct combining a tomb with temples, courtyards, and enclosures. The pyramid formed the focal point of an extensive walled ritual precinct.
Djoser: An early Old Kingdom pharaoh of Egypt, also known as Netjerikhet. The pyramid was built as his royal tomb and memorial.
Great Enclosure of Saqqara: The massive stone perimeter wall surrounding Djoser’s funerary complex at Saqqara. Its recessed façade and false gateways shaped the precinct’s ceremonial boundary.
Third Dynasty of Egypt: An early Old Kingdom dynasty that ruled Egypt during the twenty-seventh century BCE. Djoser’s reign belongs to this dynasty, when royal monument building changed markedly.
Serdab: A sealed chamber in an Egyptian tomb that housed a statue of the deceased. A serdab beside the pyramid held a statue of Djoser with openings for ritual presence.
