Pyridoxine

Pyridoxine is a water-soluble form of vitamin B₆ that the body converts into pyridoxal phosphate, a coenzyme used in amino-acid metabolism and other reactions.

Pyridoxal phosphate: The active coenzyme form of vitamin B₆ used in many enzymatic reactions. Pyridoxine is converted into this principal active form.
Vitamin B6: A group of related compounds that serve as precursors to the coenzyme pyridoxal phosphate. Pyridoxine is one of the vitamers included in this broader vitamin group.
Dietary supplement: A product taken to add nutrients or other substances to the diet. Pyridoxine is commonly sold as a vitamin B₆ supplement.
Vitamin B6 metabolism: The processes by which vitamin B₆ compounds are absorbed, converted, used, and excreted. Pyridoxine’s effects depend on its handling across this larger metabolic system.
Pyridoxal 5′-phosphate: The phosphorylated, coenzyme-active form of pyridoxal used in vitamin B₆-dependent reactions. Unlike pyridoxine, it is already in an active coenzyme form.
Pyridoxine 5′-phosphate: A phosphorylated form of pyridoxine that is converted into pyridoxal phosphate. This intermediate is formed when pyridoxine is phosphorylated.
Pyridoxal: An aldehyde-containing vitamin B₆ vitamer that can be phosphorylated to form pyridoxal phosphate. It is a close structural relative and another precursor of the active coenzyme.
Vitamin B6 toxicity: Harmful effects caused by excessive vitamin B₆ exposure, especially from prolonged high-dose supplementation. High-dose pyridoxine can cause sensory nerve damage.
Plasma pyridoxal 5′-phosphate: A circulating measure of pyridoxal phosphate commonly used to assess vitamin B₆ status. It can indicate whether pyridoxine intake has raised the body’s active B₆ pool.
Pyridoxine hydrochloride: A stable hydrochloride salt of pyridoxine used in supplements and medicines. This is a common manufactured form of pyridoxine, not a different B₆ vitamer.
